In this detail, the focus is on the passage of scripture that describes Jesus' struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane. Another interesting fact about this painting: the willow branches in the painting allude to an ancient Jewish custom of beating the floor with willow fronds after parading them around the altar each day during Sukkot, during the transfer and transformation to the synagogue. This "mysterious" custom leaves many Jews scratching their heads as to it's symbolism, but I see the transfer of our sin to Christ through his beating, his stripes. What's even more interesting, I added them to the painting before knowing this. Jesus has given me his heart to reach the Jewish people with the message of the Gospel.
